5 tips to help when babies get colds and flu

It's that time of year again. Cold and flu viruses are everywhere and babies, with their untested immune systems, are easy victims.

Congestion, coughs and runny noses are no fun for baby and can make for a stressful time for mummy. There are ways you can make your little one more comfortable though.

  • Use a syringe to clear your baby's mucus. These are simple to use and really make a difference. This short video shows you how to use the syringes correctly. http://www.babycenter.com/2_how-to-use-a-bulb-syringe-to-clear-your-babys-mucus_10357065.bc
  • Make some steam. The moist air helps loosen the mucus.
  • Vapor rubs. Natural balms are best. Rub into chest, neck and back area.
  • Head up. Elevating your baby's head when they are sleeping can help them breathe more easily.
  • Lots of rest. Try to help your baby relax as much as possible. It takes energy to combat an infection.

Baby stolen at just 3 hours after birth

This terrible story hit the news this week here in Italy. Baby Luca was stolen just three hours after his birth. Luckily the story has a happy ending in that the baby was found, in good condition and is now back with his parents.

The amazing thing about this case is that the person who stole the baby was a nurse and mother of two. How can a mother do such a thing to another?

Fingers everywhere

Right from the word go, babies love putting things in their mouths. I've even seen scans where babies suck their thumb whilst still in the womb!

After a while they will become bored with wists and toes and start looking for other objects. It therefore becomes important to have a good selection fo safe toys that they can 'experiment' with.

As they get older, this curiosity for touch and taste grows. Toddlers will likely often be seen exploring their nose or sucking fingers or thumbs. Given that they will also be touching various other things - my son for example loves collecting stones and flowers when we go to the park or play in the garden - you may feel that this isn't exactly the best.

Trust me, after a while you'll realise his just 'making anti-bodies' and building his immune system and you'll stop freaking out so much.

That being said, it's a good idea to clean hands often. Soap and water, wet wipes or disinfectant gels are all good, so make sure you have at least one to hand at all times.

Try teaching your child to wash his own hands too. If his anything like my son, he'll love the chance to 'play' with the water. Making the child actively involved in the action is much more educational for them (although it does mean you should be prepared for clothing changes and wet bathrooms).

Obviously you'll probably want to get them out of the habit of inserting fingers everywhere too. Be patient though. They will grow out of it. It's just a fase in their personal growth.

Do you have tips for keeping babies clean whilst they explore their new world? Is you're child driving you crazy with his 'finger exercises'? Share your comments.

What do you do when the only answer is NO?

As a mother of a two year old, it's been a few months that the most common answer I get from my son is "No" (even when not asking a question). He has in fact become fascinated by the word and will sometimes even yell it with all his strength (which can be slightly embarassing when it happens in a public place and everyone turns to look, giving me the 'you're not a bad mother are you' stare - I'm sure it's there- as I try to calm him down and explain that I was just asking if he wanted a drink -whilst giving my best 'I'm a good mother really I am smile').

If, like me, you're going through this period with your child,  you might find this article I can across useful :

Resistance: What to do about the endless no's

It provides a nice action plan of ways to help over come the situation.

Welcome!

A little about me:

I became a 1st time mum when my son was born on 17th December 2007. However, the road to motherhood wasn't an easy one. I had a miscarriage back in 2002 at two and a half months. Although the pregnancy hadn't been a planned one, my husband and I were happy at the idea of becoming parents and were both disappointed when things went wrong. It turns out it was just one of those things. No real reason for why. It just wasn't meant to be.

The whole experience did make us realise just how much we wanted a baby though and so after giving ourselves a few years to organise ourselves a bit better we decided to try for a baby. I feel pregnant that very month.

That pregnancy wasn't easy either and I ended up passing the best part of 8 months on bed rest with several visits to the hospital thrown in along the way. I was affected by Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which basically means excessive nausea and vomitting during pregnancy.

At 8 months (almost to the day) my waters broke and off I went to the hospital for a c-section birth. The hospital staff were great. Many of them remembered me from my stays there during the earlier months of the pregnancy.

Despite arriving a month early my son was doing great and after just a couple of hours was moved from the premature unit in with the other babies. He is now a full of energy two year old.

Here are a few books that deal with the topic of  Hyperemesis Gravidarum. I am not linked to any of them and offer them here purely as reading suggestions.

I hope you will enjoy reading this blog and find the posts useful in your journey as a 1st time mum.
