Also known as seborrhoeic dermatitis, cradle cap is a common skin condition that may manifest in newborns and infants. It's a rash that is usually either yellowish and greasy or scaly and appears predominantly on the scalp.
Although not particularly attractive to look at, cradle cap shouldn't irritate or cause the baby to be uncomfortable.
How to treat it?
The condition often goes away on it's own but there are a few things you can do to treat it.
- Apply baby oil to the child's scalp. A gentle massage with a small amount of baby oil before bed should be enough. I have personally used Johnson's baby oil on both my sons and find it works well.
- Shampoo. Washing the child's head with shampoo can help. Use a mild product (again I'm a fan of Johnson's baby range and use their no tears baby shampoo). Apply a few drops to the affected area and leave for a minute before rinsing. Then gently comb the scalp with a soft baby brush until dry.
If scales and flakes are visible beyond the head area (in severe cases it can be found on the face and chest), it's a good idea to consult your pediatric or a dermatologist.
