I went to my son's nativity show at his playschool last weekend and the head nun gave an interesting and thought provoking introduction before the kids showed off their musical and acting talents.
She spoke of how children are taken to see Santa in the lead up to Christmas and have their photo taken on his knee. She told a rather funny story of a small child being taken to sit on this strange man's knee and feeling shy and a little uncomfortable as they told this man, whose eyes and nose poked out from behind a huge white beard, what presents they wanted for Christmas whilst the child's parents hurried to take the perfect photo.
She then told a different story about the reaction of children in front of a nativity scene. The nativity with it's baby surrounded by his family, friends and animals had nothing scary about it and meant that the child was relaxed, asked questions and spoke about what they saw.
I personally take my children to have a photo taken with Santa (neither is scared at the idea) and think it's a nice way to get the little ones excited about the holidays.
I do however also make a nativity scene at home as part of the Christmas decorations (we add to it each year) and involve my eldest son in its construction.
